Access to specialist diabetes knowledge at Diabetes Professional Care 2019 (DPC2019) has been increased thanks to a major new collaboration.
A national UK audit of the first technology device allowed to be prescribed for people with Type 1 Diabetes, presented at the American Diabetes Association in San Francisco, shows important benefits both in lowering glucose levels in those with high levels before use of the device and a reduction of hypoglycaemic attacks (‘hypos’ caused by low blood glucose levels). There is also a reduction in the rate of diabetes related-hospital admissions and a reduction of diabetes-related psychological distress during the initial six months of FreeStyle Libre use.
As of 1st August 2023 this scheme has been suspended whilst it is under review. No applications will be accepted at the current time.
ABCD will consider claims from members who are Specialist Registrars to assist with travel expenses when presenting their work at an international meeting.
In the first instance you would need to submit a proposal via the Travel Grant Scheme Application Form detailing the reasons you would like to claim, the destination meeting and the sum to be claimed.
On 14 May, Diabetes UK launched a report on mental health and diabetes which shows that 7 out of 10 people have felt overwhelmed by the demands of living with diabetes and three quarters of people with diabetes can't get the emotional and mental health support they need. Diabetes UK are calling on the NHS to ensure that everyone with diabetes is asked about their psychological wellbeing as part of every diabetes appointment.
NHS advice will be offered online to people with type 2 diabetes to help them manage their condition via a first of its kind service. The new offer, will mean people with type 2 diabetes have evidence-based information and support available at the touch of a button, via an online portal, giving them convenient and quick help to deal with the physical and mental challenges of diabetes.
Eleven sites will now pilot the new service later this year, with a national roll out from 2020.
Simon Stevens, Chief Executive, NHS England, has warned, that “obesity is the new smoking”, after calculations showed that cancers caused by obesity will increase by 62 per cent by the end of the next decade. Some 360,000 people in Britain will get cancer because of their weight in the next ten years, the projections estimate, meaning that the UK is fast catching up with the US.

We wish to thank all those who worked so hard to submit data in time for our second deadline, and we are pleased to inform you that we had 296 users from 156 sites in 114 centres contributing data on 6644 patients. 5589 patients had a least one baseline HbA1c and 2043 patients had at least one follow up HbA1c. Analyses are now being undertaken for the two presentations at the at the American Diabetes Association Annual Professional Conference in June and we will then be considering the first paper to be written.
